Yesterday upon the stair
I met a man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
Oh, how I wish he’d go away
When I came home last night at three
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall
I couldn’t see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don’t you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don’t slam the door
Last night I saw upon the stair
A little man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
Oh, how I wish he’d go away
“Antigonish” (1899)
William Hughes Mearns (1875-1965)
A note on style:
I am of the opinion that posted quotes should be italicized, followed by a dash, then by the author, actor, etc. un-italiced.
If an actual utterance, then enclosed in quotation marks as well. If just some interesting prose, then no quotation marks.
Yes, that one was aimed right at you. You liked the Alimentary Astronomy from a few months back, so I figured this would strike your fancy. I am still somewhat chagrined that you didn’t see it right away. 😦
c.monster – I agree, something like that is streamlined and unambiguous.
“Sweater Puppy Interferometry” … I am so envious of that turn of phrase I could just die.
WHO should this be attributed to? Not King. Donovan’s Brain… before that. Who? It feels like a contemporization of Shakespeare but it isn’t.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts,
with stoutest wrists and loudest boasts,
he thrusts his fist against the posts
and still insists he sees the ghosts.
“This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today”
And for some reason, that reminds me of:

Judges?
What is that Latin phrase – “By your silence I assume assent”?
The yeahs have it!
I think it makes sense, CM.
I’m still intimidated by that Sweater Puppy Interferometry phrase, CM.
It definitely left a welt on my ego…

Sorry – I’ve been distracted lately and haven’t done much more than skim my usual Net route.
Well, if you’re going to skim–snooch is the way to go. Who cares about the text.

I read here that it dates back to at least 1901 book, The Musical Basis of Verse.
